In case you missed it, Star Wars has released several clips and TV spots to promote the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story movie over the past week. Aside from the dazzling visuals and generally giving me all the feels, there are some interesting nuggets of information buried in these clips...which, inevitably, raise more questions about the movie than before.
Here are five questions I have after watching the new Solo clips. Warning: potential spoilers ahead.
1) Who is Enfys Nest, and what are they after?
The character Enfys Nest is ambiguous in more ways than one (in fact, we don't even know their gender yet), but from the clips that are out there already, it seems that Enfys Nest may lead the rival gang of Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany). What planet they're on in the above clip is unclear (likely a new planet), but I found another appearance of what appears to be Enfys Nest in another TV spot. It's so quick, you might have missed it:
What's interesting is that this suggests that Enfys Nest acts as the villain for at least part of the film, even though Dryden Vos is known to be the primary villain of the film. This leads to my next question...
2) Dryden Vos is the film's presumed villain, but he's clearly got a preexisting relationship with Qi'ra and appears to be Han's employer in the beginning. Where's the turning point?
As you can see from the above clip, Vos seems comfortable around Qi'ra, perhaps even romantic based on his closeness to her. In another TV spot, he refers to her as his "top lieutenant," but appears to be fighting with her in the following clip. Take a look:
The fighting scene appears to be more of an excercise rather than a legitimate fight, but it does raise the question...if Vos is the film's primary villain, when is the turning point? What does he do that would turn the crew against him? There aren't any clear hints given here, but it's an intriguing thought nonetheless.
3) If Lando loses the Falcon before the escapades chronicled in the movie, what makes him stick around?
The above TV spots suggests that this card game is not only the way that Han met Lando, but where Han wins the Falcon from Lando. Clearly, this event occurs near the beginning of the film since the Falcon is used throughout the movie. The question remains, then, why does Lando stick around for the rest of the movie? If he just lost one of his most prized possessions, why stay? As a gambler, it's not unlikely that Captain Calrissian could be bribed into the journey or perhaps promised a huge reward if he joined the crew. I see the latter as more likely, but we'll see...
4) Who is Val (Thandie Newton)?
We know next to nothing about her character already, but even these new clips serve little to further our knowledge. Here's the thing: she seems to join the infamous "crew" at some point, but where and why? Here sparse appearances in the promos we've seen so far suggest one of two possibilities, either she is insignificant or really, really significant. I'm going with #2. Maybe she has a big secret or a big connection to the original movies? Who can say, but I'm anxious to see her role in the film when it releases.
5) Why hasn't Chewbacca learned his holochess lesson?
The above clip actually parallels a scene from A New Hope, which comes sequentially after Solo: A Star Wars Story. Why hasn't Chewbacca learned his lesson? Maybe its his tendency towards temper tantrums that messes with his judgment. Or...maybe its the change of actors? Just kidding. This scene is hilarious if not anything else and was perfectly done on the writer's part. Hopefully, this signals that the film will pay homage well to the classic performances and humor of Peter Mayhew and Harrison Ford.
