Could Rey give in to the Dark Side?
Star Wars has been teasing it for quite a while. Whether it's Snoke's allusions to prior contact with Rey or a cryptic Instagram post, all signs at least point to a struggle against the darkness within herself. Yet, Lucasfilm again decided to tease us further with a new teaser on their Facebook page:
Did you catch it? At the very end of the trailer, we see Rey wielding Kylo Ren's fearsome cross guard lightsaber. Could this mean she's--gasp--a Sith? Or becoming one?
Without seeing the movie, I can't definitively rule it out. But, there are a couple of things I noticed from this teaser that perhaps rule against it. First, she is definitely, as we can insinuate from prior trailers, in Snoke's throne room. We already know that she has contact with Snoke in the film (and perhaps even when she was a child), so this is no surprise. However, Kylo Ren's lightsaber has clearly not been given to her--for a brief moment in the teaser, you can see that she doesn't have it in her hands. Rather, she pulls an old trick from The Force Awakens and attracts the saber with the Force.
Second, it is clear that the Praetorian Guards standing next to her are antagonistic. Once she has the lightsaber, the guards turn their weapons on her. Obviously, then, she isn't on good terms with Snoke. We might reasonably guess that this is a Return of the Jedi situation where she attempts to strike Snoke down (maybe of his own invitation). To that end, two questions arise: where is Kylo Ren, and what happened to Rey's lightsaber?
It's almost impossible to tell where Kylo is at the moment, as we can't really trust the order of scenes in the trailers to be chronological. Further, no shots of Kylo in the throne room have been revealed yet. Quite possibly, he has found Luke and is seeking to mete out some sort of punishment for his Jedi ways--but at this point, it seems to be all conjecture.
A more interesting question is what happened to Rey's lightsaber? Before now, we've never seen her in possession of another lightsaber. It could be a simple matter of her simply losing her grip on it in her scuffle with Snoke, but what if she has permanently lost it (as this particular lightsaber seems to have a habit of doing)? What if she ends up wielding this new lightsaber color at the end of the film?
The way I see it, there are probably three different people who will end up with this new lightsaber at the end of this movie. I could see Rey possibly doing so if she does indeed lose this blue lightsaber; quite frankly, though, this seems unlikely since the lightsaber has been officially dubbed "Rey's lightsaber." It almost seems strange to take it out of the films so abruptly after it has been renamed. Luke could be the new weapon's keeper--I mean, if he's not really a Jedi anymore and he's definitely not a Sith, what existing color would he use? If he uses a lightsaber at all anymore, that is...he may very well not own a lightsaber anymore, having become something of a pacifist.
Most intriguing to me, though, is that it might be Snoke. Andy Serkis, who plays the Supreme Leader in the films, has recently said that Snoke is not a Sith, though he is proficient in the Dark Side. If he isn't Sith but he is strong in the Dark Side, he would likely not use the classic red saber that has become synonymous with the Sith. Maybe a nice gold to match his royal attire? Only time will tell, I guess.
Anyway, that's all for this week's *maybe overly in-depth* analysis of Star Wars news. The Last Jedi is just a week away, guys! Be sure to stay tuned to my blog for more analysis as Star Wars Takeover Month continues all December long.
I'm doing a giveaway on my Facebook page--The Last Jedi POP! Giveaway, to be exact! I've got Chewbacca (with Porg) and Praetorian Guard POP! figures to give away. All you have to do to enter is like my Facebook page and comment on this post what color lightsaber you would want if you were a Jedi/Sith (maybe that gold color I was talking about?). It's super easy and free! So what are you waiting for?
