Solo: A Star Wars Story released this past weekend to timid reception at the box office (even though I personally liked the film), but Disney has plenty of spin-off Star Wars movies already in the pipeline. Details of these new movies are slim, but we can speculate, right? Here are three "Star Wars Stories" that are rumored to be in the future.
Warning: spoilers ahead for Solo: A Star Wars Story!
After a Han Solo movie, this seems like the logical next step, right? We already know that Alden Ehrenreich (young Han Solo) is signed on for an additional two films, meaning we could see a Boba Fett film explore a prior relationship between Solo and the bounty hunter. Another intriguing claim about the movie is that it's already got a director. According to a report, Logan director James Mangold has been hired to helm a standalone Boba Fett film, but there's no official word on that yet.
I would rate the likelihood of this happening at a solid 55% only because Fett is a beloved character, but at this point, I wouldn't be pumped to go see a movie about him. In some respects, I think it would be nice to give this (honestly) unexciting and apparently unskilled character some backstory, but like Solo, I fear that audiences will have a difficult time adjusting to seeing these old characters rehashed under new actors.
Donald Glover's performance as Lando Calrissian was pretty much lauded all around (I was extremely pleased with it), but is that enough to justify a separate Lando movie? Actually, the source of this rumor is Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, herself: "We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian," she reportedly told a French news outlet. “Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca, but Lando will be next." Lucasfilm partially denied this, citing a mistranslation and stating that she really said "it's something she'd like to do one day in the future."
Honestly folks, I'm ranking the possibility of this happening pretty low...a good 30%, even. As much as I love the character and the way Glover portrayed him, who wants to see another Lando movie when we just saw Solo, which featured him extensively?
This rumor stems out of a few things, I think. 1) Ewan McGregor has fed the flames by saying that he'd be happy to return as Obi-Wan. 2) Rumors continue to swirl about Lucasfilm secretly assembling a crew for the endeavor. 3) It would be great. 4) Darth Maul's cinematic return in Solo.
Now, I do think there is one major thing that leans in this one's favor. Ewan McGregor has pretty much been established and accepted as young Obi-Wan, so Lucasfilm won't have to overcome the hurdles that new actors playing old characters entail. That said, the story would presumably be about Obi-Wan's exile on Tatooine...and that sounds really boring (and no, I do not think they are going to redo his battle with Maul, as much as Maul's return to cinema has inspired that hope). I'm not saying they couldn't do something interesting with that, but, who knows?
I rank the possibility of this slightly ahead of Boba Fett, but still at a dubious 60%. While I would be thrilled to see Ewan McGregor take up the Kenobi mantle again, who knows what direction Kathleen Kennedy would take? (*in a whisper* It should happen though.)
